How much does it cost to setup a node?
Node prices vary based on the type of equipment or amount of coverage you want to provide. An easy way to get started with a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) node for under $100 is to purchase a linksys WRT54GS and have it flashed with custom firmware. You can flash the firmware yourself or one of the juneauwireless volunteers can do it for you.
Do I have to provide internet access?
Absolutely not! The primary purpose is to create a wireless mesh for the surrounding area. A side benefit of this is that some nodes also provide Internet access.
What is WDS?
WDS is a wireless bridging system that allows an accesspoint to also act as a client to a nearby AP that has WDS enabled, thus allowing traffic to continue on. The only requirement is that both APs HAVE to be on the same channel.
Can I get more involved then just providing a WDS node?
Absolutely, WDS is great however providing high-bandwidth links (i.e. links over 5Ghz or special 2.4Ghz point-to-point long distance links) will increase the reliability and throughput of the entire network. Also segmenting WDS clusters and putting in more expensive routing systems will increase speed. But just 1 WDS node will help you and your neighbours create a community wide network.
